The origins and evolution of human cognition and the impact of southwestern european coastal ecology

The main objective of this project is to investigate the emergence and development of complex human cognition during the transition from Neanderthals to early Modern Humans in Southwestern Europe, and to ascertain the impact that changes in coastal ecology, including sea level and coast lines, and rapid climatic shifts might have had in this particular moment of the human past.

The Middle Paleolithic occupation of Gruta do Escoural (Southern Portugal)

Gruta do Escoural is one of the few cave sites in southern Portugal where Middle Paleolithic occupations have been identified. This project, funded by the Wenner-Gren Foundation, will resume geoarchaeological work at the southern entrance of the cave where a series of Neanderthal occupations have been previously identified and dated to ca. 48 ka cal BP.
